About the GST Calculator

"GST calculator" is a search almost every small business owner, freelancer, and online shopper in India has typed at some point — whether you're pricing a product, checking an invoice, or working out how much tax is baked into something you bought. This calculator handles both directions: adding GST to a base price, or extracting the base price and GST amount from a total that already includes tax.

India's GST has four main slabs — 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% — applied depending on the category of goods or services. When you're quoting a price exclusive of tax, use 'Add GST' to see the final amount your customer pays. When you have an invoice or receipt that already includes GST and want to know the actual base price (useful for accounting, input tax credit claims, or just understanding what you're really paying for), use 'Remove GST' instead — this correctly divides by (1 + rate) rather than just subtracting the percentage, which is a common calculation mistake. This tool is useful for freelancers and small businesses generating quick invoices, shoppers checking how much tax is on a purchase, or anyone reconciling GST-inclusive and exclusive pricing.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Select the applicable GST rate.
  3. Choose whether to add GST or remove it from an inclusive amount.
  4. See the base amount, GST amount, and total.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard GST rates in India?

The main slabs are 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%, with some items also at 0% or under special rates — the applicable rate depends on the specific goods or service category.

How do I remove GST from a total amount correctly?

Divide the total by (1 + GST rate) to get the base price — simply subtracting the percentage from the total gives an incorrect (too high) base amount.

What is input tax credit?

It's a mechanism allowing GST-registered businesses to claim credit for GST paid on their purchases against the GST they collect on sales, avoiding double taxation — not something this calculator computes directly, but the base/GST split here is a starting point.

Is GST calculated on MRP or base price?

GST-inclusive MRP already has tax built in; use 'Remove GST' on the MRP to see the base price and tax component separately.
